Answering One of Life’s Hardest Questions

Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about what you want in life, only to feel overwhelmed by the gap between your dreams and reality? The question “How can I get what I want?” is one of life’s hardest, but it’s also one of the most empowering. By breaking this question down and exploring actionable steps, you can transform your desires into achievable goals. Let’s explore this journey and discover how to bridge the gap between what you want and how to obtain it.

Understanding the Importance of Clarity

Before diving into the how-to’s, you must clarify what you truly want. Are you seeking a new career, improved relationships, better health, or perhaps personal fulfillment?

Understanding your desires is the first step toward getting what you want. Here’s why clarity matters:

  1. Direction: Knowing what you want provides a roadmap. It helps you set specific goals and makes it easier to determine the steps you need to take.

  2. Motivation: When your desires are clear, you’re more likely to stay motivated. The clearer the vision, the more excited you’ll be to pursue it.

  3. Resource Allocation: Clarity enables you to allocate your time, energy and resources effectively. You can focus on what truly matters instead of spreading yourself thin.

Steps to Get What You Want

  1. Set Specific Goals: Vague desires can lead to vague actions. Instead of saying, “I want to be fit,” specify what that means for you. Is it running a 5K, lifting a certain weight, or simply feeling healthier? Set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, “I will run 5K in under 30 minutes within three months.” Don’t say “I want to,” but always say “I will.”

  2. Create an Action Plan: Once you’ve set your goals, outline the steps you need to take to achieve them. Break your goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and create a timeline for each step. This makes the journey less overwhelming and helps you track your progress.

  3. Adopt a Positive Mindset: Your mindset plays a significant role in achieving what you want. Adopt a positive outlook and believe in your ability to succeed. Practising gratitude and self-compassion can also help you maintain motivation during setbacks.

  4. Stay Open to Opportunities: Sometimes, the path to what you want isn’t a straight line. Be open to unexpected opportunities and experiences that can lead you toward your goals. Be flexible and adaptable—these qualities will lead to better outcomes than you initially envisioned.

  5. Seek Support: You don’t have to go it alone. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your growth and hold you accountable. Whether it’s friends, family, a coach or a mentor, having a support network can make a world of difference. You might consider joining a group that aligns with your goals.

  6. Take Consistent Action: Progress is made through consistent effort. Commit to taking small, daily actions toward your goals, even when motivation wanes. Building a routine can help solidify these actions and make them part of your daily life. Remember, every small step counts!

  7. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly reflect on your progress and be willing to adjust your plan as needed. Sometimes, life throws curveballs that require you to reevaluate your approach. Being open to change is vital; it allows you to pivot and find new paths to your goals.

  8. Celebrate Your Achievements: As you make progress, take the time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Recognising your efforts reinforces positive behaviour and keeps your motivation alive. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination!

You’ll find that working with a professional life coach or mentor will be an invaluable guide to figuring out how you’re going to get what you really want. They have walked this path themselves and know how to tackle deep issues that may, at first glance, appear to be impenetrable.

Accepting the Challenge

In the end, the question “How can I get what I want?” is not just about reaching a destination but also about the journey of self-discovery and growth that accompanies it. By setting clear goals, creating actionable plans and engaging fully in the process, you can navigate the complexities of life and work toward achieving your desires.

I’ll leave you with this thought-provoking question: What’s one small step you can take today to move closer to what you want? Whether it’s jotting down your goals, reaching out to a friend for support or taking a step toward a healthier lifestyle, every action counts.

Great read Bernard. In my experiences I have found many people don’t know what they really want. When you are able to bring some clarity into this area the successive steps of goal setting, motivation, monitoring are easier to implement. I would say, knowing you want Is the key to getting what you want.
